Kokkilai Sanctuary

It is a wildlife sanctuary approximately 25 km south east of Mullaitivu.Kokkilai lagoon and its surrounding area was designated as a bird sanctuary on 18 May 1951 under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance (No. 2) of 1937.It currently has an area of 1,995 ha (4,930 acres)
Numerous varieties of birds are found in the sanctuary including cormorantsducksegretsflamingosherons, ibis pelicans and storks. Elephants are also found in the sanctuary.



Chundikulam Bird Sanctuary

It is surrounded by the Jaffna lagoon on the east and west,and Kantavalai on the south and lyakkacci on the west. It is about 50 meters from the coast.
According to environmentalists,some species fly here to lay and hatch eggs, since the temperature here is conducive for breeding. Some of the 28 birds seen here are endemic to Northern Province
Chundikulam was declared as a bird sanctuary in 1938, is one of the best wildlife destinations for visitors who plan to visit the northern region of the Island.
Its undulating landscapes have over the years created a large variety of habitats The area consists of beaches with sand dunes,to salt marshes etc. Some of the most elegant birds to be watched include peacockpigeonsdoves and  woodpecker. Large flocks of glorious pink flamingos are among the most striking migrants to this area. It is located 65 km from Jaffna
